Many of the top riders which fell to injury before and during the 2008 supercross season will return to competition during the first round of the 2008 AMA motocross championship including James Stewart, Mike Allessi, Michael Byrne and Ivan Tedesco.
Fans awaiting the return of James “Bubba” Stewart to the AMA motocross series in 2008 were not to be dissapointed as Bubba was the fastest in practice with a best time of 2:42.278 on his KX450F. James Stewart is riding very confidently after getting his knee fixed and is fast and flowing throughout all sections of the track without even choosing lines. James does not seems phased about where he is on the track he just carries momentum and nails it everywhere.
The fastest rider in the unseeded qualification rounds was Ben Townley. Townley has only just moved up to the 450 class and looks promising early in the season riding a CRF450R and just under Bubba’s fastest lap with a 2:42.463. Close in third is David Millsaps also riding a CRF450R with a best time of 2:42.523. Riders making a best lap in the 2:43 second range were Andrew Short CRF450R, Ivan Tedesco CRF450R and Steve Boniface.
Tedesco seemed unhappy with the first practice but rode aggressively in the second practice session. Townley, who missed the whole 2008 supercross season is looking for consistancy . “I just want to build back into the pace that I can run”, said Townley.
In the lites class Austin Stroupe has blitzed them all with a flying 2:42.502 on his KX250F. Jason Lawrence qualified with a best time of 2:44.053 on his YZ250F. These riders were followed by Kyle Cunningham CRF250R, Trey Canard CRF250R, Ryan Villipoto KX250F and Brett Metcalfe KX250F all with times around the 2:45 mark.
