How to replace your brake pads

Replacing the brake pads on a modern motocross bike is fairly straight forward once you know what to look out for.
Brake pads should generally be replaced once their thickness is less than half the original width or when they have become glazed and lost their ability to perform well.
On my KX250 there is a short screw which covers an Allen key threaded brake pin at the rear of the caliper. Remove the screw and the break pin and drop the brake pads out by pushing the end of the brake pad that was sitting on the brake pin in a downward motion.
Make sure the metal clips which keep the brake pads from falling out, probably at the furthest point from the pits on the track, stay in place and are seated correctly.
Before you put the new brake pads in, check the brake pin for notches or grooves where the old pads may have worn in. If there are any notches in the brake pin you must replace it as your new brake pads will get stuck in the notch and wear down as much as the ones your replacing in next to no time.
Now would be a good time too clean your caliper and brake disc with some brake cleaner.
Hold the new brake pads in place while you reinsert and tighten the brake pin. Reinsert the small grub screw and tighten.
