The circuit at Glen Helen raceway, San Bernardino, California featured a large sand section mixed with hard pack, square edged bumps and huge jumps for the opening round of the 2008 AMA motocross championship. The extremely fast and dangerous track coupled with the different conditions on the track made bike setup extremely difficult.

In moto 1 of the premiere class Mike Alessi got the holeshot but James Stewart took the lead soon after. Both riders pulled away quickly from the rest of the pack, Ferry, Townley, Tedesco and Milsaps.
Milsaps soon started moving through the pack into fourth early in the moto. Townley pulled the position back and gained a lot of ground on Ferry but then dropped the bike and lost the position again . Soon After Milsaps found some more speed and took third away from Tim Ferry

In moto 2 Alessi pulled the holeshot again and like moto 1 Stewart took the lead soon after. Andrew Short was run over in the second corner after a front end wash out and looked in bad shape as he slowly got up and back onto his bike. The early leaders were Stewart and Mike Alessi followed by Davy Milsaps, Ben Townley and Timmy Ferry. Townley pulled out early in the moto due to bike problems. Eric Sorby had a bad crash and wedged his bike into some mesh fencing. Paul Carpenter left the track with a knee injury.

Millsaps and Ferry has a fight for third midway through the moto, Ferry took the position briefly but Milsaps regained the position.

Alessi commented during the break that he was saving himself for the second moto, but said he tried his hardest in moto 2. James “Bubba” Stewart said he thought he would have been slower after spending little time on the bike after his ACL knee surgery.
