In Australia you are required to plug the end of your handlebars before you are allowed to race. There are several do it your self methods available but I’m not sure if the meet the requirements of race governing and licensing bodies. So to ensure your bike passes scrutineering on race day, get hold of a set of colored trick bar ends to suit your ride.

Fitting them is easy but you should take your time and make a neat job of it. It works best if your fitting a new set of grips at the same time. That way you can position them so you only take a minimal amount of each end of the grip.

Start with the clutch side of the bars and cut the end off just inside the lip and as close as you can to the end of the grip. The bar end has a threaded bolt with attaches to an expandable sleeve. Generally the bar end kit will come with a couple of different sized sleeves so use the one that is the closest to the inside diameter of your bars that is the snuggest fit.

Before you hack away at the throttle side grip you will have to reveal the throttle sleeve. The plastic throttle sleeve is usually covered in at the end so you have to cut a hole in the end just big enough to slide in on the bar without catching. You may need to cut a hole in the end of the grip and roll it up to expose the plastic sleeve in order to cut it back. Remember to cut as little as possible of the sleeve as possible. Slide the throttle sleeve to the inside about 10mm (5/8″) and thin trim just the very end of your existing grip. Now attached the throttle side bar end by inserting its expanding sleeve inside the bar and tighten it up. Check your throttle action to make sure it doesn’t stick If you’ve made a neat job of cutting the end you may need to slide the throttle inside a little more to prevent it sticking.
